INDIANAPOLIS – The Indy Fuel, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks and the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, announced Friday that they have signed defenseman Chase Nieuwendyk to an ECHL contract. Nieuwendyk will join the Fuel in time for the team’s game Friday night in Kalamazoo against the Wings.

Nieuwendyk, 27, comes to the Fuel after starting the season with the Southern Professional Hockey League’s Evansville Thunderbolts, tallying one goal and four assists in 14 games. The 6-foot-1, 201-pound blueliner looks to make his ECHL after spending the last two years in the SPHL, where he collected 18 goals and 35 assists in 107 games played split between Evansville, Fayetteville FireAntz and the Huntsville Havoc.

Prior to turning pro, Nieuwendyk completed a four-year collegiate career at SUNY-Brockport (NCAA Div. III), where he produced at over a point-per-game pace collecting 45 goals and 56 assists in 92 contests. The native of Georgetown, Ontario led the Golden Eagles in scoring during three of his four years at school, earning First Team All-SUNYAC honors as a junior and senior. A three-year product of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, Nieuwendyk is the nephew of Hockey Hall of Fame inductee and three-time Stanley Cup Champion Joe Nieuwendyk.

The Fuel begin a 3-in-3 weekend Friday night with a Central Division showdown against the Kalamazoo Wings at Wings Event Center, followed by stops in Fort Wayne and Wheeling on Saturday and Sunday. Indy returns to the Indiana Farmers Coliseum for a two-game set with the Tulsa Oilers on Dec. 14-15.
