Matt Tomkins nabs ECHL Goaltender of the Week honors

Fuel netminder wins award for the third time this season after stopping 67 of 69 shots last weekend

PRINCETON, N.J.  – The ECHL announced Tuesday that Matt Tomkins of the Indy Fuel has been named the CCM/ECHL Goaltender of the Week for the week of January 21-27. The second-year netminder wins the award for the third time this season, and the fourth time in his career.

 

Tomkins, 24, went 2-0-0 in two appearances over the weekend, posting a miniscule 1.00 goals against average and a .970 save percentage. The native of Sherwood Park, Alberta made 30 saves Friday to record his first career professional shutout in a 5-0 victory over Fort Wayne, before turning aside 37 of 39 shots Saturday as Indy defeated Kalamazoo 4-2. Tomkins has led the Fuel to at least a point in each of his last seven starts, posting a 4-0-3 record, a 2.26 goals against average and a .933 save percentage over that span.

 

Through 33 games this season, Tomkins holds an 18-11-3 record alongside a 2.95 goals against average and a .912 save percentage. Under contract with the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs, Tomkins currently leads the ECHL in wins (18), saves (998) and minutes played (1,975). 

 

In parts of two seasons with Indy, Tomkins has compiled a 29-20-5 record in 58 appearances, along with a 3.16 goals against average and a .912 save percentage. The product of Ohio State University also saw action in eight AHL games with the IceHogs last season, posting a 1-4-2 record. 

 

The Fuel are back in action this Friday as they head to WesBanco Arena to take on the Wheeling Nailers in a Central Division showdown. Indy returns to Indiana Farmers Coliseum next Friday to take on the Kalamazoo Wings.
