Matt Tomkins named CCM/ECHL Goaltender of the Week

PRINCETON, N.J. – Matt Tomkins of the Indy Fuel has been selected the CCM/ECHL Goaltender of the Week for the week of Oct. 15-21. The 24-year-old goaltender earned the honor for the second time in his career, previously winning the award the week of Dec. 4-10, 2017.
Tomkins continued his strong start to the season over the weekend, posting a 2-0-0 record along with a 1.92 goals against average and a .947 save percentage in a pair of appearances. The native of Sherwood Park, Alberta turned aside 39 of 40 shots faced Friday in Indy’s 4-1 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones, before making 33 more saves Saturday as the knocked off the Toledo Walleye 4-3 in overtime.
Two weeks into his second professional season, Tomkins has helped backstop the Fuel to their best start in franchise history. In four starts with Indy while on assignment from the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs, the goaltender has posted a 3-1-0 record alongside a 2.47 goals against average and a .926 save percentage.
A seventh-round selection of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft (No. 199 Overall), Tomkins has compiled a 14-10-2 record in 29 career games with the Fuel, posting a 3.32 goals against average and a .914 save percentage. Splitting time between Indy and Rockford in 2017-18, the product of Ohio State University also saw action in eight AHL games with the IceHogs, logging a 1-4-1 record.
