Sternberg signs on with Fuel for 2014-15

Former Lake Superior State defenseman to launch pro career with Fuel.

INDIANAPOLIS – Toronto, Ontario native Zach Sternberg, a 2014 graduate of Michigan’s Lake Superior State University, signed with the Indy Fuel for the 2014-15 ECHL season, the team announced Thursday. A 6’0”, 187 lb. right-handed shooting defenseman, Sternberg’s signing marks a return to Indiana for the puck-moving blue-liner, a 2009 graduate of Culver Military Academy.

“It’s terrific to be starting my pro career in such a familiar place,” said Sternberg on Thursday. “I’m excited to be back in Indiana and looking forward to playing my part in this new era of hockey in Indianapolis.”

In four seasons with Lake Superior State from 2010 to 2014, Sternberg, 23, registered 11 combined goals and 41 total points in 121 career appearances for the Lakers in the CCHA and WCHA. Prior to his collegiate career, Sternberg tallied four goals and 34 points in 61 games played during his lone season of junior competition with the CJHL’s Nepean Raiders in 2009-10.

“Zach is a solid defenseman with strong offensive instincts,” explained Fuel Head Coach and Vice President of Hockey Operations Scott Hillman on Thursday. “We expect his ability to move the puck to be a valuable asset on the power-play.”

Sternberg says Hillman’s style of play during the coach’s professional playing career drew him to the Fuel. “Coach Hillman was an offensive-minded defenseman and so am I, so I feel there’s a similar mindset there,” said Sternberg Thursday. “I’ve heard nothing but positive things about him and I’m excited to play for him this season.”

As for his approach to the game, Sternberg says fans can expect an up-tempo, attacking presence on the blue line. “I certainly pride myself on playing fast,” said Sternberg Thursday. “I like to push the pace and jump up into the play while always taking care of my own zone.”

In 2014-15, the Indy Fuel, the proud “AA” affiliate of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks and AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, drop the puck on their first season in the ECHL.
